Günter Krüger (Judoka)

Günter Krüger (born January 10, 1953 in Pasewalk ) is a former judoka from the GDR . He was European champion in 1974 and 1978 and also won three bronze medals at European championships.

Athletic career

In 1970 Günter Krüger won the title at the European Cadet Championships in the weight class up to 65 kilograms. In 1971 he was third in the European Junior Championships in the weight class up to 70 kilograms, and won the title two years later. At the European Championships in London in 1974 , Kruger defeated Valeri Dwoinikow from the Soviet Union in the final and won his first European title in the adult class. The following year he finished third at the European Championships in Lyon . Krüger's best placement at the GDR championships in 1975 was second behind Dietmar Hötger .

With the reorganization of the weight classes in 1977, Krüger switched to lightweight, the weight class up to 71 kilograms. At the GDR championships he won four titles in a row from 1977 to 1980, two of them ahead of Karl-Heinz Lehmann . At the European Championships in 1977 in Ludwigshafen, Krüger won a bronze medal. The following year he defeated Valery Dwoinikow in the semifinals of the European Championships in Helsinki and Engelbert Dörbandt from Germany in the final . In 1979 Krüger won bronze again at the 1979 European Championships in Brussels after losing to Briton Neil Adams in the quarter-finals . At the 1979 World Championships in Paris, he also lost in the quarter-finals against Neil Adams.

Krüger started judo at SG Dynamo Pasewalk-Nord and was delegated to SC Dynamo Hoppegarten in 1969 . He was trained first by Gert Schneider and later by Dietmar Hötger. After studying at the German University for Physical Culture in Leipzig, Krüger himself worked as a judo trainer.
