He then completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter until 1958, before completing a degree in professional education at the University of Hamburg for the next four years until 1962 . From 1962 to 1964 he was a student trainee in Hamburg. From 1964 he finally worked as a vocational school teacher in Delmenhorst, where he became head of department in Oldenburg in 1973. Since 1971 he was a member of the Education and Science Union, where he held various functions. In 1971 he became a member of the SPD. On June 5, 1985, he moved up to the state parliament of Lower Saxony, to which he belonged until the end of the tenth electoral term on June 20, 1986. After leaving the state parliament he was again active in Delmenhorst local politics in the city council. In 2001 he was nominated for mayoral election for the Greens, but had no chance against the CDU candidate. After differences with the district association of the Greens, he resigned from the Green parliamentary group in the Delmenhorst city council in 2008 and joined the FDP parliamentary group. However, he emphasized that he wanted to continue to belong to the regional association of the Greens and merely to withdraw from the district association.
