Günter Rossow

Günter Rossow (born May 17, 1913 in Deutsch Krone , † July 31, 1992 in Marktredwitz ) was a German sculptor. The range of his works included realistic and stylized representations as well as fantastic and abstract forms.

Life

As a teenager he made his first woodwork as early as 1927. In 1935 he attended the stone carving school in Wunsiedel with Artur Sansoni , in 1936 the wood carving school Bad Warmbrunn (Silesia). In the following year he was enrolled at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Edwin Scharff , and in 1938 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Thorak . In 1939 he received his draft notice for World War II . In 1940 he married in Wunsiedel. In 1945 he returned from the war and from American captivity . He moved into a nine square meter room as a studio, which was located opposite today's hotel "Wunsiedler Hof". In 1950 he built the first real studio on the Katharinenberg, at the same time he received major commissioned works for the first time. In 1960 he built a house next to his studio. At this time he also took part in public competitions and had exhibitions at home and abroad. In 1968 he built the ball fountain in front of the town hall in Bayreuth. 1970-89 he expanded his studio and won major competitions. During this time he also created other fountains and figures in many German cities. His last work, "Johannes with Child", he completed in 1991.
