Günter Vittmann

Günter Vittmann (born February 29, 1952 in Vienna ) is an Austrian Egyptologist and demotist .

Career

Günter Vittmann studied Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Vienna from 1972 to 1976 and was employed at the Oriental Institute of the University of Vienna from 1976 to 1978. In 1977 he was in Vienna with the work of priests and officials in Thebes the late period of his doctorate . From 1978 to 2000 he worked on the project Demotic Name Book and from 1984 to 1997 lecturer for Egyptian-Arabic at the Institute for Oriental Studies at the University of Würzburg . In 1994 Vittmann completed his habilitation there with a new edition of the demotic papyrus Rylands 9 , a long petition by an Egyptian priest from the time of Darius I.Since 2000 he has been a member of the project Database of Demotic Texts at the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature . In 2001 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Würzburg. In 2011 he was awarded the Rudolf Meimberg Prize .

Günter Vittmann is married and has two children.
