Günther Herbert Tontsch

Günther Herbert Tontsch (born August 2, 1943 in Kronstadt , Romania ; † November 21, 2007 in Hamburg ) was a German legal scholar and co-founder of the Transylvanian Library Foundation .

Life

Tontsch was born as a member of the German-speaking minority of the Transylvanian Saxons in Kronstadt (Romania). Childhood and adolescence were shaped by the numerous reprisals and supply bottlenecks at that time. After his parents separated, he grew up with his mother Renate. After graduating from high school, he moved to the University of Cluj in 1962 , where he studied law until 1967.

In 1967 he was initially a research assistant and rose to senior assistant until he left in 1978. In Germany, his academic training was only partially recognized, so that he first successfully passed his second state examination at the University of Cologne in 1982, before receiving his doctorate summa cum laude in 1985 in Hamburg. From 1984 to 2007 he worked in the Department of Eastern Law Research at the University of Hamburg and headed it from 1985–1991.

In 1965 he married Brigitte Killyen and they both had two sons. After the divorce in 1994 he married Jutta Hauser in 2001. He died in 2007 after a brief, serious illness.

voluntary work

As part of his commitment to the preservation of the Transylvanian Saxon culture, he worked for many years in the working group for Transylvanian cultural studies - from 1986–2001 on the board. In this context he was one of the initiators and founders of the Transylvanian Library Foundation , which is located in Gundelsheim. In addition, he was involved in the Southeast Europe Society as Vice President and in the German-Romanian Society for the reconciliation and understanding of all the peoples of Romania and remained in close contact with the University of Cluj-Napoca until his death . a. as part of exchange programs. The University of Cluj-Napoca hoisted half-mast in his honor on the occasion of his death.
