Günther Kerstein

Günther Gustav Kerstein (born October 11, 1904 in Hameln ; † March 29, 1979 there ) was a pharmacist and chemical historian.

Life

His father, Wilhelm Kerstein (1859–1922), had been a pharmacist in the Raths pharmacy in Hameln since 1890 .

Günther Kerstein studied pharmacy with the chemist Georg Lockemann in Berlin and medicine in Munich and Münster.

He married Elfriede Russell. Their son Eike Wilhelm, who also became a pharmacist, was born on September 13, 1938.

After the Second World War he took over the management of the Raths pharmacy. In the 1950s he started producing his own medicines. He founded the Pharmaceutical Factory in Hameln , which offered cardiac glycosides in ampoule form, and Galenopharm , which manufactured veterinary preparations. After several acquisitions, the company has been trading under the name Pharma Hameln GmbH since 1978 . In 1967 his son took over the management of the family business with 200 employees. In 2014 the company was taken over by the Siegfried Group .

At the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , he was a lecturer in the history of chemistry and pharmacy. He was also treasurer and chairman of the chemistry department in the German Society for the History of Medicine, Science and Technology in Frankfurt.
