Günther Schäfer (born June 9, 1962 in Waiblingen ) is a former German football player and coach.

career

Schäfer played 373 Bundesliga games for VfB Stuttgart and Arminia Bielefeld and was assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart.

His greatest successes are second place in the 1989 UEFA Cup and second place in the 1986 DFB Cup, as well as the German championship in 1984 and 1992 . He achieved all of his successes with VfB Stuttgart.

He was highly valued by the supporters of VfB Stuttgart due to his great commitment, which distinguished him as a "tough" defender. His rescue operation, which made it possible to win the German championship in 1992, has not been forgotten by the fans: he used overhead kicks to prevent a possible goal in the decisive game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , although he risked a serious injury as a result of this action.

In 2015 Schäfer became team manager at VfB Stuttgart. He had previously headed the Bundesliga club's soccer school.
