Günther Schmelzer

Günther Schmelzer (born June 3, 1922 - † May 2, 2008 ) was a German brigadier general .

Career

From January 1, 1961 to October 15, 1961, he was the captain of the 4th Company in the Panzergrenadier Battalion 302. Schmelzer was Chief of Staff of the 11th Panzer Grenadier Division from 1967 to 1970 and then until 1975 commander of the 32nd Panzer Grenadier Brigade in Schwanewede . He later became deputy division commander of the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division in Neumünster . He was retired on October 1, 1982.

Private life

After his retirement, Schmelzer moved from northern Germany to Eberbach, where his father was based in Rockenau. There he became a co-founder and, since March 14, 1983, first chairman of the Museum Association of Eberbach , which opened the town's local history museum in 1986, which in 1989 was recognized as an outstanding local history museum in the administrative district of North Baden . On October 24, 1993 he gave up the chairmanship of the association. From 1987 until his death he was also a member of the Eberbach reservist comradeship.

Awards

Schmelzer was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and since January 6, 1991 the Ring of Honor of the city of Eberbach.
