The city of Güstrow was awarded the city of Schwerin around 1219–1226 . Soon afterwards - in the 13th century - the first Gothic town hall was built on today's market square.

Around 1800, today's “new” town hall was built by the builder David Anton Kufahl using older parts. The elongated classicistic east facade takes up the empire style of the Napoleonic period. It extends over four gabled houses with a raised central section. The cladding of the pilasters and the garland decorations characterize the facade. There is a small mansard gable over each of the narrow sides . The audience hall with the stucco ceiling with the motif Justice and Peace is remarkable .
