description

Second entry into the Għejżu cave

The archaeological site is located in the south of the village of Xagħra , about 300 m west of the two temples of Ġgantija and directly on the main and commercial street Vjal 8 ta 'Settembru . Other archaeological sites in the vicinity are the Xagħra Stone Circle (Brochtorff Circle) located about 150 meters to the southwest and the Santa Verna Temple , which can be found on a field about 680 m to the west.

The natural cave is 13 meters long, 6 meters wide and between 0.9 and 1.5 meters high. It has two openings - a narrow entrance to the south and a round hole, possibly the result of a ceiling collapse, to the north. Various megalithic structures have been identified on the rock plateau above, including probably a dolmen . The question of whether there is a connection between them and the cave cannot currently be answered. The Għejżu Cave was discovered in 1933 and then immediately cleared. Only ceramic shards from the Ġgantija phase were found. Some bore traces of red ocher , which was used in Maltese prehistory for cave paintings , for decorating ceramics and for burial of the dead.

The Għejżu Cave is listed under inventory number 44 on the list of cultural assets of Malta .
