GAdmintools is a collection of software that provides a graphical user interface for a selection of certain server services under Linux . The user can configure and manage the server services and monitor processes in real time via the graphical user interface.

purpose

The graphical user interfaces of the GAdmintools represent an alternative to operating the server services directly via the command line.

This is especially helpful for beginners to become familiar with the server services. Supported operation of the server services, in which all options are presented to them optically, is usually easier for them than unsupported handling via the command line, in which the user has to know the respective commands by heart. However, they also offer advanced users an advantage over the command line in terms of monitoring . An example of this is GAdmin-ProFTPD: This allows the currently logged in users and their activities to be graphically displayed in real time. B. to take action with a few clicks of the mouse. Although all of this is also possible via the command line, these actions require in-depth knowledge of the ProFTPD server service as well as in-depth knowledge of command line programming.

Use & installation

The tools are written in C / GTK + and can therefore run under graphical user interfaces that support GTK +, e.g. B. Gnome and KDE .

The source code and ready-made installation packages for various distributions are available on the project homepage. Most GNU / Linux distributions offer ready-made GAdmintools packages for installation in their repositories, e.g. B. Debian , Ubuntu or Trisquel . Depending on the distribution, the tools are listed as individual packages, or the entire GAdmintools collection as a suite, in the sense of a meta-package, which is why the repositories are listed both according to GAdmintools and with the names of the individual programs, e.g. B. GAdmin-ProFTPD should be searched. Originally, however, the tools are independent programs that can easily be installed individually.

Remote administration

With the GAdmintools, not only server services running on the local machine can be administered, but also those that are active on other machines.

For this purpose, a tunnel to the machine to be administered is established via ssh . For example, it is possible to use the GAdmintools to control and administer several remote machines with a computer on which an X server is running, on which no X server (and consequently no GAdmintools) is running, but only the respective server services .
