Society for Didactics of General Education
The Gesellschaft für Didaktik des Sachunterrichts (GDSU) eV is the professional association of people from universities, teacher training and teacher training and schools who are active in research and teaching in general teaching and its didactics . Its task is to promote the didactics of general teaching as a scientific discipline in research and teaching, as well as to represent the interests of the school subject . It was founded in 1992. Walter Köhnlein ( University of Hildesheim ) was the founding chairman . It is based in Berlin.
Goals and Membership
The aim of this scientific society is to promote science and research and to further develop education and training in the field of subject teaching and its didactics. This is achieved through various activities, in particular through the organization of annual specialist congresses, through the organization of conferences, seminars and lectures, through the promotion of intradisciplinary communication within the overall area of non- specialist didactics and interdisciplinary communication with its reference disciplines, through the publication and promotion of Specialized publications, through the suggestion and support of research projects, through scientific statements on questions of teacher training and pedagogical practice of the subject teaching, by informing the public about the status and development of the subject teaching and its didactics, by the promotion of the young academics, by the cooperation with other subject didactics as well as through the international cooperation in the field of subject teaching and its didactics.
The organs of the GDSU are the general assembly, the board of directors and the scientific commissions and working groups. The group of state representatives has been in existence since 2006 to intensify and consolidate cross-border communication and cooperation with regard to the development of general teaching and its didactics.
The Society for Didactics of General Education has around 500 members in 2018, mainly from Germany, but also from Austria, Switzerland and Japan.

Publications
Since 1992, the GDSU has been publishing annual volumes on "Problems and Perspectives in Subject Education" in the Julius Klinkhardt publishing house . There she also publishes the series "Research on the Didactics of Subject Lessons", the "Perspektivenrahmen Sachunterricht" for the content orientation of the subject lesson as well as its accompanying volumes and her self-portrait "The Didactics of Subject Lessons and their Association GDSU eV".
The “GDSU-Journal” and the “GDSU-Info” booklets appear in your own print.
Meetings
The 27th annual meeting of the Society for Didactics of General Education will take place in March 2019 at the University of Lüneburg. The annual meetings usually take place at the beginning of March at different university locations with a didactically relevant main theme. The title of the 2018 conference at the University of Dresden was “Research-based learning in subject teaching - conditions, concepts and effects”. The working groups also meet on their own. The GDSU also organizes supra-regional colloquia for doctoral students every year.
Prices
The GDSU awards the Ilse-Lichtenstein-Rother Prize annually to promote the next generation of academics for particularly outstanding doctorates and post-doctoral qualifications in the didactics of teaching, and until 2018 the Faraday Prize was also awarded for work with a scientific-technical focus.
In addition, a GDSU prize is awarded for excellent teaching practice.
