The blue -tailed mackerel ( Trachinotus ovatus ), also known as the three-point long-finned mackerel or Palometa , is a species of fish from the family of the mackerel (Carangidae) that grows in the eastern Atlantic from the British Isles over the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean Sea to the coast of Angola and rarely occurs in the waters off Scandinavia . The species is of little importance in commercial fishing, but is widely fished and also kept in aquaculture and public aquariums .

shape

Like all members of the genus, the body of the bläuel is high back and strongly compressed on the sides. The animals reach an average length of around 35 and a maximum of 70 centimeters, the documented maximum weight is 2.8 kilograms. They are dark green on top, with a silvery belly and three to five vertically elongated spots on the front part of the lateral line . This is almost straight with only a slight curve over the pectoral fins and has no reinforced scales at the rear end. The dorsal , anal and caudal fins have black tips. The dorsal fin consists of a front part with six individually standing hard rays and a rear part with one hard and 23 to 27 soft rays. The rear part is about as long as the anal fin, which has a hard and 22 to 25 soft rays and in front of which there are two hard rays. The pectoral fins are larger than the pelvic fins but smaller than the head. The caudal fin is deeply forked. The gill trap has 10 to 19 thorns on the upper arm and 22 to 32 on the lower arm of the first gill arch.

Way of life

Bläuel stay mainly in clear water near the shore over a sandy bottom, where they form swarms. Young animals often stay on rocky cliffs at night. Fish, mollusks and crustaceans serve as food.

The spawn is released in the summer months. The eggs swim in open water.
