Trachinotus is a genus of jacks (Carangidae)consisting of twenty species. Trachinotus species are found in tropical and subtropical zones of the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans , and the common mackerel ( Trachinotus ovatus ) also in the Mediterranean , on the European Atlantic coast, in the Irish Sea and in the North Sea . Some species also penetrate into brackish water , more rarely into fresh water .
features
Trachinotus species are 34 to 122 cm long. They are very high back and strongly flattened on the sides. Their mouth is relatively small and does not reach below the back of the eyes. If teeth are present, they are small and stand in a narrow row. The throat is scaled. In contrast to those of the genus Caranx, the pectoral fins are shorter than the head and not sickle-shaped. The parts of the dorsal and anal fin, supported by hard fin rays, are elongated, the soft-finned sections are approximately the same length. The upper edges of these fins are dark in most cases. The tail fin stalk has neither pits nor keels. The scales of the posterior sideline are not prickly as in Caranx .
