The Gaberkirche near Luden in Lower Austria is the best preserved remnant of the ruined Gaber Castle .

History and description

Gaber Castle, built around 1300, is reported as deserted as early as the 15th century. Since the best preserved walls come from the former castle chapel , the name Gaberkirche has become commonplace and is also used on maps.

In the Austrian Art Topography , published in 1911, the remains of the nave of the castle chapel are described as partially preserved west wall, completely preserved south wall and consisting only of the foundation wall of the north wall.

The west wall had an arched doorway. A stone-framed square and a narrow ogival window were built into the south-facing wall. The replacing choir also had ogival windows. On the inside of the Gaberkirche, the beginnings of three combined ribs and the remains of the triumphal arch were preserved.

The ruin, which is more rarely referred to as the Gaberwald Church, is said to have been a place of pilgrimage that is only known regionally .
