Gabiley ( Somali : Gabileh ; Arabic غابيلي) - also written Gebilay , Gibileh or Gebileh - is a city in the west of the Woqooyi Galbeed region in northern Somalia with around 17,700 inhabitants according to calculations. Estimates sometimes go well beyond this number.
The city is the administrative seat of the Gabiley district of the same name in Somaliland, which has been de facto autonomous since the outbreak of the Somali civil war .
The place is about 54 km west of Hargeysa in a comparatively fertile area, which is known as Dhul-beereed or the bread basket of Somaliland . Agriculture in Gabiley is considered to be the second major source of income for the Somaliland administration after the port of Berbera . However, the need for food is far greater than the region can produce.
According to information from Somaliland, in addition to cereals (corn, wheat and barley), vegetables such as beans, peas, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, garlic and cabbage are grown. Some of the estimated 1500 artificially irrigated farms in the region even produce oranges, papayas and watermelons.
In contrast to most other regions of Somalia, the population here does not only live concentrated in the capital as a metropolitan area, but spread over numerous places and small towns, some of which have existed for over 150 years.
Gabliey has had a hospital and university since 2010, the Tima-ade University .
