Gabisgarten
In northern Upper Bavaria, Gabisgarten refers to small parcels of land on which the population grew vegetables, mostly cabbage, for their own needs.
location and size
Gabis gardens are located on the outskirts, they are directly adjacent to one another and each courtyard had its own parcel. A plot of a Gabisgarten is about 10 m wide, the length varies from about 50 to 70 m.
Derivation
Originally Latin, the name Kapis for a cabbage head was developed from caput (head) in High German . In the Bavarian dialect it became Gabis .
distribution
Gabis gardens came and still occur in the area of Schrobenhausen , Ingolstadt and Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm . Today mostly only hallway or street names remind of the former use:
