Gabriel Abossolo

Gabriel Abossolo (born January 16, 1939 in Yaoundé ; † November 2014 ) was a Cameroonian football player who completed his entire professional career in France.

Career

The 177 centimeter tall midfielder Abossolo grew up in the French Cameroon colony , which became part of the state of Cameroon in 1960, and played for the capital club Tonnerre Yaoundé . His achievements aroused the interest of the French second division club Girondins Bordeaux , who brought him to the French mainland in 1958. The then 19-year-old midfielder, who was occasionally called up on the defensive, was initially a substitute player. At a time when substitutions and substitutions were not yet possible, he made five appearances in his first year as a professional and was involved with this in 1959 ascent to excellence. In the top French league he became a regular player, but had to accept direct relegation in 1960. Despite the setback, he remained loyal to the team and managed to rise again with Bordeaux in 1962.

After the resurgence, the team was able to establish itself, with Abossolo being set as a regular. In addition to placements in the top regions of the table, he made it to the national cup final in 1964; the Cameroonian was on the pitch in the final, but suffered a 2-0 defeat against Olympique Lyon . In the league he just missed winning the title three times with the runner-up in 1965, 1966 and 1969. Despite the missing title, he made his debut in European competitions in 1964 and qualified with the team for the international competition again and again in the following years, although it was never enough to win a title. Even in this successful phase of the club, the player remained consistently of the first team and failed again in 1968 with a 1: 2 against AS Saint-Étienne in the cup final. Subsequently, he finally lost his position on the team and returned to Bordeaux in 1969 after numerous second places, but without winning a trophy, his back.

He signed in 1969 with the second division RFC Paris-Neuilly and completed a season for this that ended in the middle of the table. In 1970 he moved to league rivals Stade Poitiers and came on occasional missions before ending his career in 1971 at the age of 32 after 202 first division games with eight goals and 92 second division games with six goals.
