life and work

Lester studied at the Akademie voor Kunst en Vormgeving St. Joost , LUCA Campus Sint-Lukas Brussel and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten . He teaches at the Sandberg Instituut of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

“My installations work from the inside out. They aim for dramatic tension and question the role of the viewer. The tension created is either implicitly narrative or explicitly visual or both at the same time. The frequent use of image sequences, parallels, visual and / or spatial combinations create an arc of tension or even a narrative plot. Topics such as the psychology of space (...) and the re-encounter with remembered places appear regularly in my artistic work. "

- Gabriel Lester

“The interplay of perception, imagination, belief and desire is the driving force in Gabriel Lester's practice. Whether performance, film, video or installation - his art is always dramatic, well balanced between pathos and comedy. Lester mentions pantomime as an early influence on his art. "
