Gabriele Gillen (* 1959 ) is an editor for politics and culture at WDR and a book author . She lives in Cologne and Berlin .

Professional background

Gillen graduated from the Cologne School - Institute for Journalism and studied political and theater sciences as well as medicine for a few semesters. After an internship in a newspaper, she became an editor at Westfälische Rundschau and has been an editor for politics and culture at Westdeutscher Rundfunk since 1988. From 2000 to 2008 she moderated the WDR 3 radio broadcast Tageszeichen .

Positions

On September 14, 2001, WDR 5 and then WDR 3 broadcast her radio essay "The price of lies or: The shadows of history", in which she describes the complicity of the West for the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 :

“The scale and severity of the attacks against the US may have been surprising, but is it also surprising that the US is falling victim to violent attacks during these times? Should we be surprised that in those parts of the world devastated by war and poverty and environmental degradation, simple solutions are called for, for revenge? Do we not want to understand that terror is not only a malicious but also a desperate answer to the division of the world into rich and poor, into slaves and rulers? "

Prizes and awards

  • In 1983 she won the IG Druck und Papier journalist award for a series on National Socialism .
  • In 2006 she received the "Free Spirit" award from the FDP for the essay The Prize of Lies or: The Shadows of History .
