Gabriele Torelli
Gabriele Torelli (born March 26, 1849 in Naples , † November 7, 1931 there ) was an Italian mathematician.
Torelli studied mathematics in the school of Achille Sannia and at the University of Naples with the Laurea degree in 1867. He was then a school teacher and teacher at a technical institute in Naples. From 1883 he was also an assistant and lecturer at the university. In 1891 he won the competition for the Chair of Algebra at the University of Palermo . In 1896 he switched to the chair of analysis. In 1907 he succeeded Ernesto Cesàro Professor of Analysis at the University of Naples, which he remained until his retirement in 1924.
He dealt mainly with number theory and analysis and wrote a monograph on the distribution of prime numbers.
He was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Naples.
He was the father of the mathematician Ruggiero Torelli .
