The Gadarene Lake is a 1.5 km long lake on the Rymill coast of Palmer Lands on the Antarctic Peninsula . It lies at the foot of Swine Hill in the ice shelf of George VI Sound . Its eastern bank borders on rock formations near the coast. It is fed in the Antarctic summer by meltwater from a ravine immediately north of Swine Hill.
Scientists at the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey discovered it in 1948 and named it after the Healing of the Taken of Gerasa from the Gospel of Mark of the Bible (Mk 5, 1–20), in which Jesus brought the demons of a possessed person into a herd of pigs ( English Gadarene Swine ). They were alluding to the behavior of their sled dogs , who had rushed into it obsessively upon arrival at the lake.
