Gaidis Andrejs Zeibots (born June 26, 1945 in Cirgaļu , Valka district ) is a Soviet and later Latvian naval officer. From 1992 to 1999 he was Commander of the Latvian Naval Forces and from 2003 to 2006 Commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces .

Life

Gaidis Zeibots developed an interest in music and technology as a child. After finishing school, he decided to combine the latter with his job and went to Leningrad to study. In 1999 he was promoted to the rank of admiral as the third officer in the Latvian Navy, after Archibald von Keyserling (1927) and Teodors Spāde (1938).

Military career

Gaidis Zeibots studied at a higher military academy for marine electronics until 1969 and then worked in the Soviet Navy . In 1975 he completed an officer course. Five years later he attended the Leningrad Naval Academy and in 1987 the Leningrad Academy of Transport and Supply for the Army and Navy . Born in Latvia, he followed the call of the newly emerging navy in his home country in 1992 and took over its leadership in the same year. He held this position until 1999. Zeibots used the time afterwards to further qualify at the US Army Military College . From 2003 to 2006 he was the commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces.

Since 1980 Zeibots had the following commands within the Soviet and Latvian naval forces:

  • 1980–1985: Deputy Chief of Staff of the Missile Ship Division in Baltiysk
  • 1985–1988: Deputy Commander of Liepāja Naval Base
  • 1988–1991: Battalion commander of the Soviet warships in Gdynia , Poland
  • 1992–1999: Commander of the Naval Forces of the Latvian National Armed Forces
  • 2000–2001: Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Defense (NATO integration)
  • 2001–2003: Deputy Commander of the Latvian Armed Forces
  • 2003–2006: Commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces
