Galaxioidea

The division of living beings into systematics is a continuous subject of research. Different systematic classifications exist side by side and one after the other. The taxon treated here has become obsolete due to new research or is not part of the group systematics presented in the German-language Wikipedia.

The Galaxioidea are a formerly used taxon of the Teleostei (bony fish i. E. S. ), more precisely a superfamily within the smelt-like (at that time counted among the Protacanthopterygii ), which according to current knowledge has turned out to be polyphyletic .

The Galaxioidea comprised the following families, which today are placed in three different orders of different sub-cohorts of the Euteleosteomorpha :

  • Galaxies (Galaxiidae), today own order Galaxiiformes, remained as the only family of the Galaxioidea in the sub-cohort Protacanthopterygii
  • Salamander fish (Lepidogalaxiidae), today separate order Lepidogalaxiiformes in its own sub-cohort Lepidogalaxii
  • New Zealand salmon (Retropinnidae), the only family of the Galaxioidea to remain with the smelt-like species, which, however , were moved from the Protacanthopterygii to the Stomiati sub-cohort as the sister group of the mouth-spined salmon
