Le Carceri prison gallery
The gallery jail / Le Carceri is a project of the municipality Kaltern ( South Tyrol ) that the premises of the former district prison since 2006 for exhibitions of contemporary art used.
history
At the place of today's gallery was originally the castle of the noble Rottenburg family , who gave the place in front of the building its name. The heavily dilapidated castle was replaced by a district court under Claudia de 'Medici in the 17th century .
The building complex is the result of various conversions and additions. The oldest components are located in the western part of the building and are dated to the late Romanesque construction period from the end of the 13th century to the first half of the 14th century. Today's gallery spaces fall into the Baroque period of the 17th and 18th centuries. It was not until the late baroque in the late 18th century that this eastern part of the building was converted into a prison. Its function as a prison ended in the early 1770s. When at the end of the 20th century the building was handed over by the state of Italy to the state of South Tyrol and finally to the municipality of Kaltern, they built a social and health district there. The larger part of the former prison was renovated according to plans by the architect Günther Plaickner and put to cultural use. Exhibitions of contemporary art have been held regularly since 2006.
In the prison / Le Carceri gallery, artist couples should have the opportunity to present their work in temporary exhibitions.
