Galle Lighthouse ( Sinhala ගාල්ල ප්රදීපාගාරය ) is a lighthouse ( English Lighthouse ) in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka . It marks the approach and port entrance of Galle .
history
After the Dutch captured Galle from the Portuguese , they began expanding the 16th century fortress and building a beacon. However, it burned down during a battle.
The British colonial administration built the first lighthouse in what was then Ceylon in Galle in 1848, which is why the station is now considered the oldest in the island state. But this tower was also destroyed by fire in 1934.
The new building from 1939 is a 26.5 m high round tower made of cast iron . It wears a 4th order Fresnel lens , has a fire height of 28 m and shows two white flashes as an identifier with a return of 15 seconds (Fl (2) W.15s).
The old town of Galle with the fortress and the lighthouse are a sight and were recognized as UNESCO World Heritage in 1988 .
