The Gallimarkt , the “ Hallertauer Oktoberfest” in Mainburg , is one of the oldest fairs in Bavaria . It is named after Saint Gall , whose name day is celebrated on October 16.

history

1397 The Duke of gave Bayern Munich Mainburg the right, in addition to the iron market on July 20, a second market at Saint Gall hold. Since the reigning Duke Johann II was dying at this time, historians suspect that his brother Stephan III. von Bayern-Ingolstadt carried out the award.

For the 600th anniversary in 1997, the Gallimarkt was expanded to eleven days and celebrated with a historical, medieval pageant.

Gallimarkt today

The festival now lasts four days and is celebrated on the weekend of the second Sunday in October. Over the years, the market has changed location several times, including on Marktplatz and Griesplatz.

Since 1949, the Gallimarkt has been connected to an agricultural exhibition at the Abens . Originally only equipment for the hop growers was shown, today it has developed into a general trade show.
