It was rebuilt in 1666/67 on the ground floor of the abbot's residence. In 1671 the band was at the same time with the dedication of the overlying Bishop Chapel (Hofkapelle) consecrated .
The chapel has an almost square interior. The walls and the ceiling are filled with 26 paintings from the life of St. Gall , presumably by Johann Sebastian Hersche . The entrance is flanked by larger than life statues of St. Mauritius and Desiderius of Vienne .
As early as 971, the St. Gallen abbot Purchart von Udalrichingen had a chapel built in the same place. Next to the entrance, Purchart was buried in 975 by Bishop Konrad von Konstanz .
Today, next to the cathedral, it is the baptistery of the St. Gallen cathedral parish.
