Gamedes painter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gamedes painter was a Boeotian - black-figure , active v vase painters in the second quarter of the 6th century. Chr.

It is named after the oinochoe in Paris, signed by the potter Gamedes . The painting shows a shepherd with his grazing flock, making it one of the earliest genre representations in Greek art. It is discussed whether the potter and the painter were identical.

The painter is one of the most original in Boeotian vase painting of the black-figure style and for stylistic reasons he can still be assigned the painting of a kantharos in Athens, which is decorated on one side with two riders and on the other with two cows and calves.
