The Gander River is a 50 km long river in the north of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
River course
The Gander River forms the drain of Gander Lake . He leaves this at the end of an elongated bay on its western north shore. The Gander River passes the small town of Glenwood . Below this, the Salmon River flows into the river on the left. The Gander River flows 50 km, initially to the northeast, later in a north-northeast direction. It finally flows into the head end of the elongated Gander Bay on the north coast of Newfoundland. The Gander River has a height difference of 29 m. Including the headwaters of the Northwest Gander River , the total length is 175 km.
Hydrology
The Gander River has a catchment area of approximately 5050 km². The mean discharge at the Big Chute gauge at river kilometer 45 is 121 m³ / s. The highest monthly outflows occur in April and May. The mean monthly discharge in these two months is 250 and 243 m³ / s.
Wildlife
The salmon stock in the Gander River is considered "not endangered". In the river system probably following other types of fish: speckled trout , lake trout , three-spined and nine-spined stickleback , Arctic Norway , American eel and the sea lamprey . Other typical aquatic inhabitants are the Canadian beaver , muskrat and North American otter, as well as Lithobates clamitans , a species of frog introduced into Newfoundland.
