from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gareth Evans (born May 12, 1946 in London , † August 10, 1980 in Oxford ) was an English philosopher who was mainly concerned with the philosophy of language .

Life

Evans studied philosophy , political science, and economics at Oxford University from 1964 to 1967 . Evans' studies were supervised by Peter Strawson as tutor. After Strawson's move to the position of Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy, Evans succeeded him as a Fellow . From 1976 Evans took the position of Wilde Reader in Mental Philosophy at Oxford University. His student and intellectual companion was John McDowell , who edited works from the estate of Gareth Evans.

Main work

The posthumously published publication Varieties of Reference is considered Evans' major work, which he could not finish before his death. As editor, McDowell took on the task of writing the manuscript for a book from the extensive drafts for the individual chapters. In terms of position, Gareth Evans belongs to the group of Oxford Neo-Fregeans. This is a philosophical direction that was founded by Michael Dummett's study of Gottlob Frege and in which Frege's distinction between sense and meaning is retained.
