Garfield Davies, Baron Davies of Coity

David Garfield Davies, Baron Davies of Coity , CBE ( June 24, 1935 - March 4, 2019 ) was a British union leader.

Life

Davies worked as an electrician from 1950. From 1956 to 1958 he served in the Royal Air Force . From 1969 he was a full-time union official at the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW) . He was able to advance professionally within this union until he became its general secretary in 1986 . He held this post until 1997.

In 1996 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire and in 1997 he was promoted to the status of a life peer for the Co-operative Party with the title Baron Davies of Coity , of Penybont in the County of Mid Glamorgan .

Davies was married and had 4 children.
