Gargara is a genus of humpback chirps from the Centrotinae subfamily. The gorse cicada , which occurs in Central Europe, also belongs to this genus. The genus Gargara is distributed practically worldwide and very species-rich. In Australia only one animal of this genus has been described, perhaps a stray from Indonesia, where the genus is widespread.

According to the catalog by McKamey 1998, more than 180 species are known, but the genus is not divided into sub-genera because the individual species are very similar. Only the closely related genus Tricentrus with over 220 species is even larger.

The Gargara cicadas are small, robust, approx. 4 to 6 mm long. The pronotum has a backward, straight, pointed thorn, but no lateral processes. It is mostly hairy and / or dotted and usually has a median groin. The head is wider than it is long. Both the complex eyes and the ocelles are relatively large and clear. The wings are transparent, with strong veins, the forewings have five apical cells and two discoidal cells.

The Gargara cicadas live on plants of many different families and suckle phloem .
