Gariwangsan ( Kor .: 가리왕산 , Hanja : 加里 王 山 ), also Kariwangsan or Gariwang Mountain is a 1561 m high mountain in the northwestern Gangwon-do province of South Korea . The mountain is part of the Taebaek Mountains and is forested with Wangsasre birches up to 500 years old .

natural reserve

Already in the 15th century ginseng was planted here for the Korean king and therefore the forest was not felled. 105 species of butterflies and 310 species of beetles were found on the mountain. The forest is a refuge for the Eurasian otter , the bengal cat , the great spotted marten and the flying squirrel . In 2008 the mountain with its 500-year-old primeval forest was designated as a nature reserve by the Korean forest authority. Five years later, the government revoked the provision.

Olympic games

The mountain became famous as part of the 2018 Winter Olympics in southeastern Pyeongchang . The Jeongseon ski area built for this purpose also required downhill pistes, for the length of which only Gariwangsan was considered. On March 20, 2014, despite protests, the South Korean government approved the logging required for this. Around 58,000 trees were felled in the course of the construction work. A new gondola lift leads to a 1370 meter high pre-summit, but it will be dismantled after the games.

mythology

One tree was spared from the deforestation measures on the route. Korean women who hope to conceive sleep under him.
