The garden tyrant ( Empidonax minimus ) is a small, insect- eating bird in the tyrant family . It is the smallest member of the genus Empidonax in eastern North America. The English name is "Least Flycatcher" . Occasionally he is also called Chebec after his reputation .

The adult birds have an olive-gray upper body. This shade becomes darker on the wings and tail. The underside of the upper body is whitish. The white circles under the eyes and white stripes on the wings are striking. The beak is relatively small and the tail relatively short. The belly is slightly yellow in color on the sides.

The habitat are open deciduous forests or mixed forests in the north of the USA and Canada. The cup-shaped nest is built in a fork of a small tree. Usually the birds sit on a branch in the lower half to the middle of a tree and fly from there to catch insects in flight. Insects are also picked up by the foliage in flight. Occasionally they also eat berries.

The garden tyrant moves to Mexico and Central America in winter .
