Gary K. Michelson

Gary K. Michelson (born January 14, 1949 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American inventor and orthopedic surgeon specifically of the spine.

Michelson graduated from Temple University and Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia in 1975. He is known for numerous innovations in spinal surgery and holds 250 US patents. In 2005 he sold his patents to Medtronic for $ 1.35 billion , with whom he was previously in litigation. He put a significant part of his income into charitable foundations for medical research. Among other things, he donated $ 50 million to the Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience at the University of Southern California and founded the Michelson Medical Research Foundation . He also donated to Los Angeles animal health ( Found Animals Foundation ) and library projects ( Twenty Million Minds Foundation ).

In 2011 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame .
