Gary Paulsen (born May 17, 1939 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American writer .

Life

Gary Paulsen became interested in writing as a teenager. To escape the chilly Minnesota winters, he regularly went to the libraries to read. Reading also helped him cope with his difficult family situation since both of his parents were alcoholics. He was raised by his grandparents. He began to improve his writing skills by initially correcting magazines. In 1966 his first book was published.

Gary Paulsen took part in the longest dog sled race in the world, the Iditarod , in 1983, 1985 and 2006 and processed his experiences in a book in 1994, which made the race internationally known. In 2001 the book served as a template for the Disney film Snowdogs (German Snowdogs - eight heroes on four paws ). He lives in New Mexico with his wife, Ruth Wright Paulsen, and they have a son named James Paulsen.
