Gary Pearce

Gary Malcolm Pearce (born February 27, 1944 in Leichhardt , New South Wales ) is a former Australian rower . In 1968 he won an Olympic silver medal with the Australian eighth .

Athletic career

The 1.82 m tall Gary Pearce competed in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo with Barclay Wade in a double scull . The two Australians finished fifth in the run-up and were eliminated fourth in their reunion. In the overall ranking they finished 13th and last.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , the Australian eighth competed in the line-up of Alfred Duval , Michael Morgan , Joseph Fazio , Peter Dickson , David Douglas , John Ranch , Gary Pearce, Robert Shirlaw and helmsman Alan Grover . The Australians took second place behind the Germany eight and ahead of the boat from Czechoslovakia. In the hope race, the Australians won ahead of the boat from the USSR. In the final, the Germans won with about a second ahead of the Australians, another second behind the eighth from the Soviet Union won the bronze medal.

Four years later, at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , the Australian eight started with the line-up of John Clark , Michael Morgan, Bryan Curtin , Richard Curtin , Robert Paver , Kerry Jelbart , Gary Pearce, Malcom Shaw and helmsman Alan Grover. The Australians took fourth place behind the boats from the USSR, the Netherlands and the GDR. With a victory in the repechage, the Australians reached the semi-finals, where they finished fifth. In the B-final they reached second place and thus finished eighth overall.

Gary Pearce is the son of Cecil Pearce , who rowed for Australia at the 1936 Olympics .
