Leichhardt is a district of Sydney in New South Wales , Australia . It is located 5 kilometers west of the Central Business District (city center) and is the administrative center of the Leichhardt Municipality . In the west, Leichhardt borders on the districts of Haberfield, in the east on Annandale , in the north on Lilyfield and in the south on Petersham , Lewisham and Stanmore .
The name of the district goes back to the scientist and explorer Ludwig Leichhardt , who came from Prussia.
history
Before British colonization, the Aborigines of the Eora language group lived in the Sydney area and were displaced.
In 1871 the municipality of Leichhardt was proclaimed. In 1949 Leichhardt merged with Annandale and Balmain and in 1967 the district boundaries were adjusted again and Glebe and parts of Camperdown were integrated. In 2003, the municipal boundaries were expanded with Glebe and Forest Lodge .

The district's shopping center is characterized by restaurants, cafes, bookstores and grocery stores. There are also hotels, three shopping centers and a cinema. The Italian Forum is stylistically based on a piazza on the Mediterranean Sea and attracts many visitors.
There are numerous churches of different faiths and several schools in the district. The Leichhardt Pioneers Memorial Park is for recreation.
Leichhardt is known in Sydney as Litle Italy . This is due to the fact that the district has developed into a center of the Italian community since the middle of the 20th century.
The district has many colored and large murals . Numerous cultural events and festivals take place on weekends. The cultural offerings attract students and young people to the district.
Because of its proximity to Sydney city center, Leichhardt has a large number of people who work there.
Since 1950, the district can no longer be reached by tram, but only by cars and buses.
