The Municipality of Leichhardt was a local administrative area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . Leichhardt belonged to the metropolis of Sydney , the capital of New South Wales. The area was 11 km² and had about 52,000 inhabitants. In 2016 Leichhardt was absorbed into the Inner West Council .

Leichhardt was in the middle of the Inner City of Sydney south of the harbor and borders the city center in the east. The area included 10 boroughs: Balmain, Balmain East, Birchgrove, Cockatoo Island , Glebe Point, Leichhardt , Lilyfield, Rozelle and parts of Annandale and Westgate. The seat of the Municipality Council was in the Leichhardt district in the southwest of the LGA.

It was named after the German Australian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt .

The Leichhardt Council had twelve members who were elected by the residents of the four wards (three councilors each from Birrabirragal / Balmain, Wangal / Rozelle-Lilyfield, Gadigal / Annandale-Leichhardt and Eora / Leichhardt-Lilyfield Ward). These four districts were determined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council was also recruited from among the councilors.
