history

Fire and extinguishing work around 14 hours after the fire started

The house was first mentioned in 1432. It is assumed that the owners at the time, the Stetter family, entertained guests there. At that time it was called Zum Schwarzen Rappen , over time the current name Raben developed from this . The house was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries. Around 1800 the facade was redesigned in the classical style. The nasal shield comes from the same time. From 1804 to 1876 the restaurant, which also had brewery rights, was run by the Mühlschlegel family. Johannes Oexle received a commercial license in 1876 and ran the inn until it was sold to the Memmingen ship brewery in 1918. The stables for the horses were on the ground floor, while the tavern and guest rooms were on the upper floors. After 1945, due to the large number of refugees from the former eastern areas, the house was used as an emergency shelter and subsequently rebuilt several times. A shop with a restaurant was set up on the ground floor, while the restaurant was retained on the first floor. The upper floors were used as living space and for an exhaust air system of a former laundromat on the ground floor. The newly furnished taproom on the ground floor was named Zum Rabennest . After the facade had been renovated in an exemplary manner, the house received the facade prize of the city of Memmingen in 1975 . Through a foundation of the Rittmayer siblings, the owners of the ship brewery, the house came into the possession of the Rittmayer Foundation , which sold it to a private person in 2009. As a result, the tap room on the ground floor was renewed and the exterior was renovated. The window openings were reopened at floor level according to old plans. In the two eastern yokes was last a mobile phone business. There was outdoor seating in front of and next to the house. The taproom on the ground floor was named Rohrbeck's after the renovations , and the taproom on the first floor was called Podium .

The second day of the fire with the departure of the west side

On January 23, 2013, a fire broke out in a rented apartment on the second floor, slightly injuring three people. The fire spread to the neighboring house at Rabengasse 1 through the faulty floors and the missing fire protection wall . The next house, which is also number 1 in Rabengasse, was so badly damaged by fire-fighting water that the city's residents were given new apartments at short notice. Only on the following day could the fire be completely extinguished by the more than 130 emergency services. For this purpose, the west side of the house was broken open for about four meters in order to reach the remaining embers . Due to security risks, it was decided around 4.30 p.m. to tear down the facade. The current owner agreed to rebuild the house in its old form. All the city fire brigades and the fire brigade from nearby Ottobeuren were involved in the extinguishing measures.

Building description

The house consisted of six to six axles and had two stories and a gable roof. The facade was designed in a classical style. In the third east yoke of the house there was a large, arched gate as a former entrance for the horses. The building had six windows on the first floor and the gable was curved twice. There were three windows on the second floor and one window on the third floor. There was a semicircular opening above the third floor window. A metal vase crowned the gable. There was a nose tag on the west side of the house. The cellar, which is believed to date from the 12th century, is vaulted.
