The guest church is a listed church building in Recklinghausen , in North Rhine-Westphalia . It was part of a poor inn, as there were many in Europe. In the Holy Roman Empire there are over 350 hospitals dedicated to the Holy Spirit in various cities .

history

The chapel of the hilligen gestes huse , which has been documented since 1403, was named in 1420 as dat hilligen Geisthus und hospitael and in 1474 as Capella hospitalis . The inn and guest church owe their existence to citizenship and Christian piety. The first surviving deed of foundation of the couple Gesa and Gerd Scheper documents the handover of a piece of land to the Heilig-Geist-Hospital for the comfort of the ancestors and for the salvation of the donors. Central Jesus' words connect God and people: What you did for one of the least of my brothers, you did it for me, it says in a significant passage in Mt 25: 35-40, the subject of which is the Last Judgment. This Gospel is the basis of the Christian tradition of works of mercy (watering the thirsty, sheltering strangers, redeeming prisoners, feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, clad the naked). From this combination of the idea of the encounter with Christ in the poorest and the emphasis on the works of mercy at the final judgment, a long foundation culture emerged. In Recklinghausen, the bourgeoisie and clergy were its bearers. The beneficiaries were primarily destitute people who found accommodation in the poor inn and were financed by contributions in kind and interest foundations. Victims of frequent fire disasters in the city also found support. In 1735 the ailing Gottes poor house was rebuilt from stones from the old city wall; In 1932 the brick building that still exists today took place. With the inauguration, the realignment as a retirement home for poor women took place. The Franciscan Sisters , who now took over the care, had already contributed to the development of the social infrastructure in the structural change to the industrial city by establishing family care in the city.

In 1978, the medieval, more comprehensive idea of the hospital movement was taken up again and the inn and guest church were revitalized on the initiative of the Münster Canisians . They were supported by the sisters of the Order of Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus from Hiltrup and by a diocesan priest. A daily food distribution for the needy and a refugee aid were set up. The prison group helps prisoners, old pilgrimage traditions were followed up, and people to talk to are available for many problematic situations in life. One-world-circle and WELTladen on Steinstrasse are facing the global challenge. The small square between the guest church and the inn has been named after Archbishop Óscar Romero since 2018 : Oscar-Romero-Platz.

architecture

The church consecrated to the Holy Spirit is the smallest in Recklinghausen. The simple plastered hall is covered with a hipped roof on which a roof turret sits. The roof was renewed around 1700 and the windows were changed to baroque style in the 18th century; the late Gothic tracery was walled up. In the interior , the flat ceiling rests on the late medieval oak beam , which is supported by stands. Archaeological investigations in 1982/83 have led to the result that the building fabric is still the original late medieval chapel in which the residents offered their daily prayers.

Furnishing

The guest church houses three altars. The middle altar is dedicated to Saints Fabian , Sebastian and Gertrud. The stipes of the high and Mary's altars were both built in the 15th century, that of the cross altar is not quite as old. The Altar of Mary contains a Madonna from the 15th century standing in a shrine made of iron grating and the structure of the cross altar is from the 17th century, while the stone relief, the main picture, is late Gothic. The original version of the relief on the baroque structure of the main altar was uncovered in 1983. On the eastern wall are the remains of two murals depicting St. Christophorus and Christ carrying the cross. The Christophorus painting was painted in the 3rd quarter of the 15th century and the Carrying of the Cross in the 4th quarter of the 15th century. Both pictures were restored in 1983. The celebration altar was made from columns of the baroque communion bench, while the massive middle part of the same was converted into an ambo.

The oak figure of the Virgin was carved in the 4th quarter of the 15th century, the veil and crown were added in the 19th century. The figure stands behind an iron lattice container that was forged in 1778. The painted Way of the Cross dates from around 1800.

The bell was cast in the 15th century, it sounds -h 2.
