Headquarters of the Gasunie in Groningen

Nederlandse Gasunie NV ( Gasunie (Gasunion) for short ), based in Groningen, is a state-owned Dutch company in the energy sector. Gasunie operates a pipeline network for natural gas with a total length of around 15,500 kilometers, mainly in the Netherlands and Germany.

background

Gasunie was founded in 1963 as an integrated gas trading company; In addition to the Dutch state, Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil each had a 25 percent share in the establishment. With the liberalization of the Dutch gas market in 2005, the gas trading business was separated from Gasunie under the name GasTerra; as part of this split, the Dutch state also acquired the shares in Shell and ExxonMobil. Since then, Gasunie has concentrated its infrastructure on gas transport.

In November 2007 Gasunie acquired a nine percent stake in Nord Stream AG , which operates the gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea between Russia and Western Europe. In 2008 Gasunie took over the transport pipeline network of the German company BEB Erdgas und Erdöl with around 3,100 kilometers of gas pipelines in northern Germany. The German subsidiary operates as Gasunie Deutschland . The BBL Pipeline, the first gas pipeline between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, is also owned by Gasunie.
