Gau [ ˈŋau ] is an island that belongs to the Lomaiviti province of the island state of Fiji in the Pacific . The island has an area of 136.1 km² and a coastline of 66 km in length. It is the fifth largest island in Fiji. The highest point of Gau is 738 m above sea level . The island is connected to Nausori Airport on Viti Levu by an airline .

The island forms one of the five traditional districts ( Tikina Cokavata ) of the Lomaiviti province and is further divided into three sub- districts ( Tikina Vou ), which have a total of 16 villages ( Koro ):
- Navukailagi Tikina (in the northeast, with three villages: Navukailagi, Vione, Qarani)
- Vanuaso Tikina (in the east, smallest district with five villages: Vanuaso, Lekanai, Nacavanadi, Malawai, Lamiti)
- Sawaikee Tikina (south and west, largest district with eight villages: Sawaieke, Somosomo, Nawaikama, Nukuloa, Levukaigau, Lovu, Vadravadra, Yadua)
Gau has a population of around 8,000.
fauna
The endemic Macgillivray petrel ( Fiji : Kacau ni Gau ), which is endangered in its population, occurs on Gau . The island is also home to some terrestrial bird species, such as the Fijian yellow downy pigeon ( Ptilinopus luteovirens ) and the Fijian goshawk ( Accipiter rufitorques ).
