Gaubahnen Wartheland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gaubahnen Wartheland was founded in 1943 as a public-law special purpose association based in Poznan . Ten district-owned small railways of the Reichsgau Wartheland were combined in it in order to be able to work efficiently through joint management. This roughly corresponded to the model of the Pomeranian State Railways , which had been founded in 1940.

It was all about district-owned government operations in which no private capital was involved. After the merger, the self-administration of the Reichsgau was also represented in terms of capital in the Zweckverband.

In detail, the following - mainly narrow-gauge - railway companies were involved:

With a total route length of 643 kilometers, only 97 kilometers were laid out in standard gauge. The remaining 546 kilometers were spread over 174 km in meter gauge, 109 km in 750 mm gauge and 163 km in 600 mm gauge. Passenger traffic took place over a length of 472 kilometers. Of course, the information changed several times.

The vehicle stock is given as 49 steam locomotives, one railcar, 50 passenger cars, 11 baggage cars, 1113 freight cars and 18 trolleys.
