The Schrodaer Kreisbahn (Polish: Sredzka Kolej Powiatowa ) was a meter- gauge narrow - gauge railway in the Schroda district in the former Prussian province of Posen .

history

The Schroda district bordered the city of Poznan in the east. Since 1875 this was connected to the district town by the Posen – Jarotschin line of the former Poznan-Kreuzburg Railway , which was nationalized in 1884 . The Schroda district wanted to create an additional connection with a small railway running further north, which would open up the center of the district area.

The first construction phase was opened on June 23, 1902. It began at Glowno station, later Poznan Ostbahnhof, where the state railway lines coming from the main station separated in the directions to Wongrowitz , Gnesen and Wreschen . On the eastern edge of the city, the standard-gauge line led via the stations Warschauer Tor, Malta and Kobylepole / Gutenbrunn / Stutenfeld train station (5.2 km) to Kobylepole stop (6.8 km). In Malta, a 5.4-kilometer route to Luisenhain, serving goods traffic only, branched off on the Poznan-Jarotschin state railway. From Kobylepole train station, the meter-gauge line ran 44.4 kilometers via Tulce / Brenkhausen-Krerowo / Kellendorf-Dembicz / Eichwalde and Schroda Stadtbahnhof to Schroda Staatsbahnhof. Schroda had around 7,300 inhabitants around 1910.

With the second construction phase, the south-west of the district was opened up. On May 1, 1910, operations began between Schroda State Railway Station and the small town of Santomischel (13.3 km) with 1,500 inhabitants. In 1914 the trains ran from Kobylepole twice a day to Schroda Stadtbahnhof and from there four times a day to Santomischel.

Pure freight railways with a total length of 53 kilometers, which were opened between 1902 and 1928, branched off from both main lines. The statistics for 1914 indicate a total network of 102.4 kilometers in length, on which ten steam locomotives, eleven passenger and seven pack / mail wagons as well as 173 freight and 3 special wagons were in use.

In 1942, the Kreisbahn gave its standard-gauge lines to the Poznan Industrial Railway, which in 1944 used 2 to 3 passenger trains a day between Poznan Warschauer Tor and Gutenbrunn. On the narrow-gauge circular track operated by the Gaubahnen Wartheland , two pairs of trains went to Schroda Stadt and three (four on Saturdays) continued to Santomischel.

Operation in Poland

1952-54 the railway was re-gauged to a gauge of 750 mm. In 1968, the passenger was Poznań - Środa Wielkopolska set. After the cessation of passenger traffic from Środa Wielkopolska to Zaniemyśl on June 10, 2001, it was resumed for tourist traffic on May 17, 2003. For a long time, the future of the railway was unclear. It was not until 2011 that the district succeeded in acquiring the entire infrastructure and now operating it privately again. Since then, the railway has been back to its original name Średzka Kolej Powiatowa (Schrodaer Kreisbahn).

Another very incisive moment in the recent history of the railway was the shutdown of the steam locomotive Px48 -1756 on May 31, 2014. At that time, the fate of the track appeared to be sealed, as there were no funds for the upcoming general inspection of the locomotive. Thanks to local political changes, the "Bana" association managed to become the operator of the narrow-gauge railway. After the appropriate financial resources were made available by the district, Px48-1756 was able to be fully examined and put back into operation on September 9, 2017. The train now runs with a more attractive timetable in the summer season on Saturdays and Sundays as well as on public holidays with three pairs of trains between Środa and Zaniemyśl (for comparison: until 2014 there was only one pair of trains between the two terminal stations on Sundays). This timetable is to be retained in the following years. It is also possible to order special trains, be it for excursions for railroad fans or for other occasions.
