Gay Mitchell ( Irish Gabriel de Mhistéal , born December 30, 1951 in Inchicore , Dublin ) is an Irish politician and member of the European Parliament for the Dublin constituency for Fine Gael , as a member of the Group of the European People's Party and European Democrats .

Mitchell studied political science at Queen's University in Belfast . In 1979, Mitchell succeeded in entering the Dublin City Council . He was a member of this for 20 years (1979–1995 and 1999–2003). During this period, Mitchell held the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin for one year in 1992/1993 , an office that had been held 16 years earlier by his brother Jim Mitchell .

In 1981 Mitchell was elected to the 22nd Dáil Éireann and was Teachta Dála until 2007 . In the 27th Dáil Éireann Mitchell was on 20 December 1994 to 26 June 1997 Minister of the Taoiseach with responsibility for Local Development and for the International Center for Financial Services ( Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach (with special responsibility for IFSC and Local Government Initiatives) ), as well as Minister of State for European Affairs. In 2004 he was elected to the European Parliament . In the elections for the 30th Dáil Éireann, Mitchell did not run.
