Eh'häusl

The Eh'häusl.

The Eh'häusl is a two and a half meter wide hotel in the old town of Amberg ( Upper Palatinate ). According to the operator, the Stadtbau-Gesellschaft der Stadt Amberg, it is now the “smallest hotel in the world”.

The name of the building may derive from early New High German Ehalten (for ' servants ', ' servants ') and was probably popularly reinterpreted as 'Ehehäuschen' / 'Ehehaus' in the 18th or 19th century .

The house was built on an area of around 20 square meters and hung between two neighboring houses without side walls.

history

One of the central concerns of the Bavarian state legislation from the 14th to the end of the 18th century was the endeavor to curb the increase in the birth rate, especially among financially less well-off people. For this reason, marriages of servants or day laborers were made difficult or even prohibited. The city council of Amberg is said to have demanded "debt-free property" as a condition for the church wedding. According to a legend, a citizen of Amberg built the Eh'häusl in 1728 to enable poor couples to marry, who are said to have sold it to the next bride and groom after their honeymoon. Until the 18th century, the house is said to have been used exclusively for newly married couples for this purpose.

When one of the two auxiliary buildings was demolished in 1976 during construction work in the course of the Amberg old town renovation, the building collapsed completely. It was subsequently rebuilt true to the original and has been operated as a hotel ever since. In the first half of 2008 the Eh'häusl was completely refurbished for around 200,000 euros.

In 2009, the city of Amberg in was under the 975-year celebration Stadttheater Amberg of 150 students of junior and senior choir of Max Reger school a musical about the origin of Eh'häusls premiered.
