Jim Mitchell (politician)

Jim Mitchell (born October 19, 1946 in Dublin , † December 1, 2002 ibid) was an Irish politician and as such an MP and Minister.

Mitchell was elected to the Dáil Éireann in 1977 for the Fine Gael . He previously held the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1976 to 1977 . As Teachta Dála he was Minister of Justice from June 30, 1981 to March 9, 1982 and from 1982 Minister of Transport and Minister of Post. In 1984 the Department of Post was replaced by the Department of Communications, making Mitchell Minister of Communications. He held his two ministerial offices until 1987. In the 2002 elections he was unable to defend his seat in the Dáil Éireann.

Mitchell was married with five children. Of Mitchell's siblings, his brother Gay Mitchell also had a political career and, like his brother, was Lord Mayor of Dublin and Teachta Dála.
