The banded clam ( Clausinella fasciata ) is a sea-living clam - a species of the clams family (Veneridae). It is the type species of the genus Clausinella Gray, 1851.

features

The flat, flattened case is almost triangular in outline; it becomes up to 26 mm long. It is unequal, the prominent, forward-facing vertebrae sit in front of the midline. The anterior dorsal margin is clearly concave while the posterior dorsal margin is slightly convex. The ventral margin is well rounded. The inner edge of the case is very finely notched. The lock consists of three main teeth in each flap. There are no posterior teeth. The lunula is flat and lanceolate or heart-shaped, but not very distinct. The large, narrow area is elliptical and almost reaches the rear end. The sunken ligament extends to about a third of the posterior dorsal margin. The two sphincters are approximately the same size and clearly outlined. The surface line is indented in a flat U-shape.

The shell is thick and tight. The ornamentation consists of a few (around 10 to 15) lamellae or bulges parallel to the edge with fine growth strips in between. The surface is very variable in color, from whitish, yellowish, violet or lavender, also brownish and reddish, occasionally with somewhat darker bands, lines, rays, stripes or spots on a lighter background. The periostracum is thin and glossy. The inside of the shell is white, occasionally tinged with purple.

The edge of the coat is reddish with whitish fringes. The short, yellowish siphons are fused together except for the tips. At the tips they are provided with whitish fringes. The thick, whitish foot is lanceolate.

Similar species

The rough clam ( Venus verrucosa ) has numerous bulges parallel to the edge that are interrupted warty. Circomphalus casina has significantly stronger ridges and ribs parallel to the edge .

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The distribution area of the banded clam stretches from northern Norway to the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands .

It lives in coarse, sandy gravel or sandy soils from about 6 to 110 meters water depth. It digs shallow in these soils.
